With the increasing number of seniors as the baby-boomers reach retirement age, there are more concerns with the fitness and overall health of those elder citizens. One fun and beneficial practice that they can indulge in is yoga for seniors.

Yoga will provide them with both the physical and mental help that they need to deal with many of the aspects of their lives. The aging process itself has a great effect on seniors but there are other issues that they commonly have to deal with as well. Some of them may have developed serious health issues and yoga for seniors can provide them with a better overall state of well-being when they use the poses that work for their individual circumstances at the time.

Yoga for Seniors Works Best When You Listen to Your Body

Yoga is not normally painful and it is especially important for seniors to know when their bodies are telling them not to push any further. While poses may require you to stretch until you can place your foot flat on the floor or other similar task, you will benefit more from falling short of this goal than from trying to force your body to do something that is uncomfortable.

These are some of the benefits gained from yoga for seniors:

• Practiced breathing techniques can help to improve respiratory and cardiovascular efficiency.

• Overall better fitness.

• Better flexibility to help prevent common injuries.

• Better body awareness to better understand the changes it is going through.

• A reduction in stress and anxiety that can be a part of normal life or due to current circumstances.

• A chance to participate in an activity with other people in similar circumstances.

• Better posture and balance that can prevent injuries due to falls.

To find the right yoga class for your needs, you will want one that will accommodate you as needed. This means finding a class that is taught by a certified instructor who takes an individualized approach to the class and its participants. Yoga for seniors will have a greater need to approach the class with a one-to-one basis. You don’t want soreness or stress to be the result of your class and everyone should have the opportunity to participate equally in the class.

No matter what your fitness level is or whether you have never been fit in your life, yoga is the one type of exercise that can provide benefits to body and mind for every individual of every age. Movement is important to everyone and yoga for seniors is the ideal way to add flexibility to your movements and get you up and moving again. Some of the illnesses that are most frequently associated with aging, such as osteoporosis, result from the lack of weight-bearing exercises we do. Joint deterioration and flexibility loss come from a lack of movement. Even the loss of balance which can lead to falls is a threat to the health of your skeletal system.

Unfortunately, a senior lifestyle is often one that is sedentary and can lead to many health concerns in those of any age. They include:

• arthritis or bursitis

• high blood pressure

• osteoporosis

• lower back pain

• poor circulation

• increased body fat

• inability to sleep well

There are many, many more concerns that can result from a sedentary life style. Don’t give in to poor health. Take a yoga for seniors class that will give you more control of your life!
Yoga isn’t just for adults. There are also many benefits to be obtained from yoga for children. You may realize that your life is filled with stress but have never considered that with all the events and sports that children may be involved in, their lives are stressful as well. If you are always in a rush to get from one spot to the next, chances are that your children are too!

Providing yoga for children can help relieve their stress. They can learn the techniques early in life that will teach them how to relax and find inner fulfillment as well as boost their self-esteem and body awareness. There is no competition in yoga so children will enjoy the physical activity without the drive to succeed that accompanies most other physical activities.

Yoga for children can also provide them with physical benefits. They will enhance their flexibility, increase their strength, improve coordination, and teach them body awareness. The improvements to their concentration will also mean better performance.

There are many things that children are able to comprehend better than adults and starting them in the practice of yoga at an early age will give them the foundation to a lifelong practice that will help them to grow in many ways. They will get to do things that they enjoy such as moving around and imitating animals or warriors.

Click here to learn more about yoga for children!

If you are teaching yoga for children, there are some important things to keep in mind:

• Don’t expect children to stay quiet. Let them incorporate sounds such as those of the animals they are posing as into their practice. You want to encourage them to learn yoga in a fun way so that they will enjoy it, not dread it.

• Encourage their imaginations. Ask them questions about what it would really be like to be the animal or plant that they are posing as.

• The term “facilitator” is used instead of teacher in yoga. Think of yourself as a guide into a different world when you are working with children. Yoga is about creation, expression, and growth.

• Stick with it. It may be frustrating to teach yoga for children who don’t like to hold poses. Find something that they can say while they are holding the poses in order to entertain them until the pose is complete. Gradually, they will improve as they begin to feel the benefits.

If you aren’t sure that yoga for children is a good choice for your child, consider the different types of improvements that it has produced:

• It has shown to increase children’s academic performance and to help them develop better work habits.

• It gives them better self-esteem, a problem experienced by much of today’s youth.

• It also helps them make better decisions by not giving in to peer pressure.

• They will benefit physically through improved strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and coordination.

• It will give them emotional balance and teach them how to decrease anxiety.

If you have enjoyed the practice of yoga and are familiar with the many benefits it has given you, then you can understand why this is such a diverse tool for children. Children’s lives have never been as complex and eventful as they are today and yoga for children is one practice that will take the edge off an otherwise hectic lifestyle.
There are many different types of yoga and each has a number of poses which you must learn. If you are just starting out, the prospect of learning these poses may be intimidating. However, there are a few recommended poses to make yoga for beginners simpler and more fun!

Once you have learned the basic poses, you will be ready to start your yoga workout and start a lifelong practice that will benefit you in many ways. Following are two poses with which you will need to be familiar before you start to study yoga for beginners.

1. Downward Facing Dog. This is a transitional pose that will take you from one pose to the next. The standing pose stretches and strengthens the entire body and will relieve back pain. Start on your hands and knees while holding your wrists straight under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Curling your toes underneath, push upward to bring the hips upward into an arc. Hang your head down while moving shoulder blades outward from the ears and towards your hips. Focus on your quadriceps to reduce the weight on your arms. Turn thighs inward and press your heels into the floor. Yoga for beginners will include placement of a towel under the heels rather than pressing them all the way to the floor.

2. Garland Pose. Stand with your feet at hips’ width apart. Bend your knees into a squat while keeping your feet pointed forward. Bring elbows inside your knees and then bring palms together in front of you in a prayer position. Keeping your forearms even with the floor, bring hands to the center of your chest, causing the knees to open slightly. Remain in this position for five breaths while keeping the spine straight and the shoulders relaxed.

Please click here for more information about yoga for beginners!

While these are basic moves used in yoga, for beginners there will be additional tips on how to gradually work into performing the poses correctly. It will take time and practice for you to achieve the flexibility you need to perform the poses precisely. It is also important that you have qualified instruction so that the poses are demonstrated in the right way.

If you are unable to find a qualified instructor in your area or just don’t have the time needed to attend certified classes, there are a number of good “Yoga for Beginners” DVD’s that you can use at home. You should also make sure that the person who has made the video is qualified the same as you would if you were taking lessons in person. Make sure that you get a DVD designed specifically for beginners to ensure that you are taught the necessary beginning poses. Once you have mastered them, you will be ready to move on to the next phase.

Some gyms offer yoga for beginners so you may be able to take advantage of classes and work out at the same spot. You can also look online for some instructional videos but will most likely find those demonstrating one or two particular moves.

Yoga is beneficial for many people as a way of getting relief from pain, reducing stress, or for keeping their bodies in peak physical condition. Once you have mastered the basics in yoga for beginners, you will be ready to choose which type of yoga you prefer and what benefits you expect to get from it.
The Many Uses of Yoga Include Using Yoga for Back Pain

Finding the roots of Yoga and its many benefits will take you all over the world. In the United States, not only is yoga a popular way of relieving stress and staying fit, there are many proponents of the practice that believe in using yoga for back pain. Nonetheless, before you start any type of treatment for your back pain, it is important that you see a doctor to find out what the source of your pain is. Serious conditions like fractures or other skeletal defects, damage to soft tissue, or system problems such as infection will need to be tested for.

One of the significant reasons that people use yoga for back pain is that it helps to reduce stress and can help relieve depression that many people with chronic back pain experience. Also, some of the poses used in yoga can reduce the amount of pain you are experiencing. According to a study at the West Virginia University, those people who used yoga for back pain not only overcame their pain better but also got past depression better than those who used only conventional treatments for back pain.

These results are no surprise to the many people who have long practiced yoga to get relief. In the study, there were ninety participants that were taught lyengar yoga by certified instructors in order to learn postures that emphasize strength, flexibility and balance. The poses taught in this type of yoga encourage proper alignment that, combined with breathing techniques, provide relaxation of the muscles while also calming the mind.

Lyengar Yoga for Back Pain

The use of yoga for back pain is primarily focused on the lyengar yoga that was taught in the West Virginia University study. Not only does it consist of precise alignment but it also incorporates props such as chairs, bolsters, and blankets to help those with less flexibility or who have sustained injuries do the poses accurately. By maintaining precise alignment, there is no concern that additional injury might occur.

The key to getting the relief you need is in finding a qualified lyengar yoga teacher who has the proper training and knowledge to instruct on the increasing levels of the practice. An instructor should be certified in the specific lyengar yoga techniques.

Even those people who have suffered from lower back pain for a number of years and who are on pain medication have been shown to get significant relief from pain intensity, improve their spinal range of motion, and have been able to reduce or stop taking pain medication after they have used lyengar yoga for back pain treatment.

Yoga Provides Relief for Many People

Chronic lower back pain is an enormous problem for people in the United States alone. Every year, more than $30 billion is spent on treatments and medications for this condition. Choosing to use yoga for back pain may not only find you the relief you need, but may be a less expensive alternative to convention medical treatments.

For most people, it is important to be able to function normally without having excessive pain that requires medication. Being handicapped with back pain and/or painkillers can greatly reduce your quality of life and prevent you from pursuing many of the activities you enjoy. Yoga for back pain may provide you with the relief you have been unable to obtain using conventional methods.

Pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s body and mind. During those nine months and for many months afterwards, changes occur at record pace. Everything from the abdominal muscles, back, hormones, legs, sleep patterns, mood and sense of awareness are altered for a woman during this time. Prenatal yoga poses and breathing techniques can help alleviate those issues and more. The changes do not end after labor either. Yoga after birth can help a woman get back in shape, deal with the stress of motherhood, sleep better, and regulate hormone changes.

Prenatal yoga poses and breathing techniques are not just helpful during pregnancy or after but they can also assist a woman in labor. During labor, the ability to focus and breathe correctly can make labor easier to bear. Prenatal yoga also opens the pelvis making the pain of labor easier.

Before trying any prenatal yoga poses, it is essential that a woman is cleared to do them by her doctor. While yoga is a calming and non-strenuous form of exercise and meditation, injury can still occur if not done correctly. There are also certain yoga poses that may be fine when you are not pregnant, but can cause harm to the baby once you are. If you are very new to yoga or are having a difficult pregnancy, it is vital that you check with a doctor before doing any poses at all.

Please click here for more information about yoga exercise!

Common Prenatal Yoga Poses

Some of the more common and easy to do prenatal yoga poses are mountain and tree poses. These are sitting poses and help you maintain your sense of balance and focus. Cat and cow pose involves getting on all fours with your hands below you shoulders and your knees beneath your hips. As you breathe in, push you pelvis down and turn your head upward to look up. As you breathe out, tuck your belly in and round your spine.

Childs pose is nice to do early on in pregnancy. You start on all fours then bring your bottom down to your heels. You then lean forward, bringing your forehead to the floor. Then, stretch your arms out in front of your head. This is great for stress relief and headache relief. To help strengthen your lower back, abdominal muscles and the buttocks, try the pelvic tilt pose. For this pose you lie down on your back and bend your knees. As you inhale, tilt your pelvis up. As you exhale, slowly bring your pelvis back to the floor.

These prenatal yoga poses practiced regularly can make pregnancy, birth and post natal experiences easier on any woman regardless of her physical shape before she tries them.

Precautions

There are important warnings that any woman doing prenatal yoga poses must know about. When pregnant, you should never try to complete a pose that feels too strenuous. It is essential that you listen to your body and realize your limitations. Since this is a time of great physical change, you may be able to do a pose comfortably one week and find it too hard to do the next week. Never push it. You have to let your changing body be your guide. Never do poses that compress the abdomen. When doing any kind of twisting pose, twist from the shoulder and back, not abdomen.

If you follow prenatal yoga poses correctly and also are mindful of your body, you can safely do yoga while pregnant and afterwards. This form of meditative exercise can bring you calm, clarity and strength at the time in your life you need it most.
There are many different styles of yoga practiced today with many providing specific benefits. There is yoga for women, men, children, and seniors alike. Research has even shown that yoga for women who had breast cancer experienced a wide range of benefits from taking the classes. This type of mind-body therapy can improve your mood and give you a better quality of life. In addition, it can relieve pain that is associated with different medical conditions including those symptoms related to cancer treatment. Those women who begin the yoga classes with the most negative emotions and worst well-being derive the most benefit.

Detoxifying the body is one of the latest trends that many people are using to ward off illness and disease. The natural stretching of your muscles and joints that you will do during yoga will massage the organs to improve the circulation of the blood to needed areas and help flush out the toxins that may be present. You don’t have to starve yourself or take any supplements to get detoxifying, just enjoy a class of yoga for women and the body will be detoxified. The massaging of all of the body’s organs will help prevent disease and help you be aware of any development of disease or disorder.

Even though you may be told repeatedly that yoga will give you a greater sense of body awareness, many people don’t understand exactly what that means. By knowing how your body feels and behaves, you will be able to detect subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. This is important in order to know if there might be a problem that needs attention before it progresses.

Much of the popularity that has been gained in favor of yoga for women is due to the celebrities who remark on their incredible results for staying in shape through regular yoga practice. Yoga does tone the muscles and improve your strength and flexibility to give you a fitter appearance. However, this is only a small part of the many benefits you will gain from attending regular yoga classes.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits to be achieved by doing yoga for women is the reduction of stress. Stress can create serious health issues and is a problem for most women. Hormones increase stress levels and yoga also helps to control the endocrine system. No matter what problems you are experiencing with your body or your mind, yoga has proven for thousands of years to be the ultimate workout for both!
Stiff joints and achy muscles can be relieved with yoga for flexibility. However, many people think that you have to have the flexibility of a gymnast in order to be adept at performing the poses to do yoga. If you think you are too old to start reaping the benefits of this ancient practice, think again! Instead of thinking that you are too stiff to start yoga, think of how beneficial yoga for flexibility can be for you!

Yoga poses, also referred to as asanas, work by stretching your muscles enough to improve flexibility without injuring them. Muscles that have a build-up of lactic acid may feel stiff, tense, painful or fatigued. Repeating the poses in yoga will release lactic acid and improve the range of motion in your joints. In addition, it can improve the lubrication of your joints so that movements are more comfortable.

Yoga for Flexibility is Far-Reaching

The many benefits that come from yoga are due in part to the different types of tissue it reaches. Not only does it improve your flexibility, it also stretches all of the soft tissue in your body. That includes the fascia sheath that surrounds muscles, ligaments, and tendons that can be injured when not kept flexible. No matter what level of yoga you are practicing, you can expect to see improvements very quickly. This flexibility is often seen in the shoulder and trunk areas first and to the greatest degree.
Different Styles of Yoga for Flexibility

There are numerous styles of yoga and different ones focus on producing a variety of results. Some are more vigorous than others and many focus on building upper body strength. Some styles of yoga focus on more precise alignment which can provide strength and endurance. There are poses that are common to many of the styles which will also build your core muscles that are deep in your torso and also include the abdominal muscles.

Benefits of Practicing Yoga for Flexibility

There are many benefits from doing yoga. When you increase your flexibility and strength, you will also obtain better posture. This is the result of strengthening your core muscles that support your body. Yoga will also make you aware of your breathing, placing emphasis on deeper and longer breaths to help you relax.

Yoga produces several biochemical responses that result in less stress. Many people feel more relaxed from their very first yoga lesson! You will also find that you have better concentration and can focus more clearly. It is also beneficial in relieving depression.

Yoga has also been shown to reduce hypertension and benefit those with heart disease and stroke as well as other medical conditions like asthma, arthritis, back pain, and more. When you do yoga for flexibility, you will get more from the practice than smoother movements. You will also get a feeling of overall wellbeing.

As we age, we tend to become stiff and mobility can become a problem for many seniors. If you make a commitment to practicing yoga while you are still healthy, you may prevent the stiffness and sore joints that many have to deal with. Even if you wait until you are suffering the effects of aging, yoga can improve your condition and relieve your pain! It’s never too late to start getting more flexible and enjoying the many benefits of yoga!
For thousands of years, people have turned to the practice of yoga to keep their body’s fluid and flexible, while keeping their minds clear and focused. In the United States, traditional yoga practices like Ashtanga yoga have been adapted to the westerners need for an intense workout. Power yoga is becoming more and more popular in the west and is now seen as a great way to get aerobic and cardio exercise while still getting the eastern benefit of self awareness and spiritual calm.

The term ‘power yoga’ was conceived by Beryl Bendere Birch. He wrote a book called “Power Yoga: The Practice” which first gave this workout an audience.

Power yoga involves many of the basic poses you see and learn during traditional yoga classes. The one unique difference is the pace of the movements. With power yoga, you flow from one pose to the other in a very fluid order. While breathing properly, a pose will be quickly held before going into a new one. This high paced intensity works to make the body more flexible. It also maximizes the art of self discipline to keep up with the flow of one pose to the next.

Benefits

There are countless benefits to doing power yoga. With this kind of workout, you are sure to work up a sweat much more than in a beginner hatha yoga class. As you sweat, you flush toxins out of your system. Getting rid of these toxins gives your blood stream more room for the oxygen you are taking in. Increased oxygen intake helps to make fat cells burn up. This burning of fat cells and removal of toxins is a great way to keep the body lean and glowing. When you do a full power yoga routine, it is estimated you can burn up to 300 calories an hour. This makes this work out a great way to get in better shape or stay in the shape you have already worked hard to get into.

This kind of yoga practice also requires a lot of focus and concentration. As you learn to pace your cleansing breaths to coincide with the pose changes, you will notice you feel centered and focused to stay on task. Your stamina will improve and you will quickly also see a build-up in endurance as you practice power yoga more and more.

Risk

This athletic form of yoga does carry some risk. Because of the quick flow of poses, some may not be prepared to keep up. Beginners may be better off trying a class with basic poses before trying to keep up with a power yoga class. Because of the amount of sweat, you can easily become dehydrated if you are not prepared for the intensity. Some may wrongfully assume that this yoga style may not drain them as much as a traditional cardio workout. However, drinking plenty of fluids before and after a power yoga session is wise. You should not feel any pain in any type of yoga. If soreness or sharp pain comes, then you are overdoing it. Listen to your body. This means only try power yoga when you are sure you are up to it.

Even though power yoga may be more challenging physically for beginners, the meditative aspects and mental calm that makes yoga a unique practice is still attainable. Bringing the mind and body together on the same plain of awareness and strength is the goal regardless of style of yoga you choose to practice.
Balance yoga is about much more than being able to stand up straight or keep your equilibrium intact. The art of yoga is all about creating balance both physically and mentally. Yoga enhances all that we are capable of doing. The practice of yoga can strengthen our bodies and minds. It can bring harmony to our chaotic lives. It creates self awareness like no other form of exercise or meditation alone can accomplish.

Most people go through daily life without realizing they are not in balance. This can be the result of repeated strain on the body or injury. You can be unbalanced by unconsciously favoring one side over another. You may naturally be stronger on one side and not even know it. Inactivity can lead to being unbalanced as well. Being imbalanced can cause strain on the joints and general discomfort. This can also cause pain. Your hips, feet, back and neck may suffer needlessly due to being unbalanced. Balance yoga techniques and poses can correct this.

Test Your balance

First, to see if you are indeed imbalanced and which side is lacking in strength, try turning your head to each side. You may notice it feels more difficult or awkward turning to one side. Bending from one side to the other can also tell you if you are unbalanced. One true test that usually points out this irregularity in balance is the ease of bending forward as opposed to bending backwards.

The key to balance is proper posture. Yoga naturally improves posture which allows your abdominal organs to work much better. Good posture allows you to breathe fuller and more efficiently. It also tightens up the abdominal muscles, making your back stronger and your appear leaner and slimmer. Proper balance and posture improves the workings of the digestive system also. Your digestive track will operate smoothly, leading to balanced eating and activity. Once you consciously focus on your improved posture, you will start to feel more balanced and more aware of your body’s strengths and movements.

Poses for Balance

Once you have maintained good posture through yoga, you can focus on balance yoga poses. Mountain pose is the perfect test to see just where you are in reference to your balance. During mountain pose, you stand straight with your legs slightly apart and close your eyes. You should begin to feel yourself center. Tree pose is another standing pose that can instantly help you achieve better balance. It also strengthens your legs, allowing for better balance even when not doing yoga.

Fish pose consist of lying on your back and then forming an arch upwards. This will strengthen your core and make your back longer and more flexible. Eagle pose is a one legged pose which is bound to increase balance if you keep trying it. Chair pose is a great way to manipulate the body and lead to focus on balance above all else.

Balance Yoga Inside and Out

Balance yoga is about so much more than the physical sensation of balance. Just as the yoga term hatha means sun and moon, our souls and environments are all about balance. The male and female, yin and yang, inhale exhale, and left and right are all centered around balance. Yoga balances our hormones, metabolism, and even the very life breaths we take. Once our physical core is balanced and our minds are clear and open to balancing our busy lives, we can truly feel centered.
Yoga involves very precise movements, breathing and focus. In order to feel the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that yoga can bring to your life, you need to do it correctly and with devotion. Yoga breathing exercises and techniques are the essential component tying all of these factors together.

Most people never realize how they breathe. We automatically do it without thought or too much contemplation. However, how we breathe really impacts our entire life. We rarely use all of our lung capacity. This means most of us are not getting all of the oxygen we should or could be. Lack of oxygen in the blood lead people to think slower and also causes fatigue. It also prevents nearly all of the body systems from functioning to their fullest. Without enough oxygen, our systems retain toxins also, which can make us sick. Diseases such as cancer and heart disease can be fueled when the body is deprived of the optimal amount of oxygen.

If you are stressed, chances are you hold your breath or breathe too quickly. This hurried breathing does no good when you need to relax or calm down. This kind of breathing when you work indoors is especially counteractive to getting the right amount of oxygen. Slouching also inhibits proper breathing. When you slouch, you take in shorter breaths and compress the abdomen.

Between pollution already diminishing our oxygen supply and toxins from our surroundings, it is more important than ever to know the importance of yoga breathing exercises.

How to do Yoga Breathing Exercises

If you are going to start any kind of yoga routine or practice, how you breathe plays a vital role in the success of your practice. You may want to focus and try yoga breathing exercises before you try to take on any poses.

First, pay attention to your breaths. Pick a focus point and deliberately concentrate on how you inhale and exhale. You may want to time your breaths to observe patterns. This will help you gauge where you might be inhibiting proper breathing without even knowing it.

There are four distinct steps to proper yoga breathing exercises. The first is called puraka. This is an inhalation. It should be smooth and continuous, not labored or fragmented. Next is a full pause called abhyantara kumbhaka. This full pause should feel relaxed. Do not tense the muscles. Let the full abdomen just be full for a moment. Try to hold this for four counts. The third step is the exhale called rechaka. This too should be smooth and continuous. This should feel relaxing as you exhale. All muscles should relax and the air should slowly be forced out of your lungs. The last step is called bahya kumbhaka. This translates to the empty pause. This is when the cycle ends. The empty pause is seen by some as a spiritual moment when everything stops and the mind is the most still. This is a very important transitional moment in yoga.

Yoga breathing exercises are the start of a process to self awareness and calm. Air is the life force we all need and depend on. Learning how to do yoga breathing exercises can help everyone make the most of that life force and use it to make their body’s and minds work to their full potential.
