Yoga for Beginners

There are many different types of yoga and each has a number of poses which you must learn. If you are just starting out, the prospect of learning these poses may be intimidating. However, there are a few recommended poses to make yoga for beginners simpler and more fun!
Once you have learned the basic poses, you will be ready to start your yoga workout and start a lifelong practice that will benefit you in many ways. Following are two poses with which you will need to be familiar before you start to study yoga for beginners.
1. Downward Facing Dog. This is a transitional pose that will take you from one pose to the next. The standing pose stretches and strengthens the entire body and will relieve back pain. Start on your hands and knees while holding your wrists straight under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Curling your toes underneath, push upward to bring the hips upward into an arc. Hang your head down while moving shoulder blades outward from the ears and towards your hips. Focus on your quadriceps to reduce the weight on your arms. Turn thighs inward and press your heels into the floor. Yoga for beginners will include placement of a towel under the heels rather than pressing them all the way to the floor.
2. Garland Pose. Stand with your feet at hips’ width apart. Bend your knees into a squat while keeping your feet pointed forward. Bring elbows inside your knees and then bring palms together in front of you in a prayer position. Keeping your forearms even with the floor, bring hands to the center of your chest, causing the knees to open slightly. Remain in this position for five breaths while keeping the spine straight and the shoulders relaxed.

While these are basic moves used in yoga, for beginners there will be additional tips on how to gradually work into performing the poses correctly. It will take time and practice for you to achieve the flexibility you need to perform the poses precisely. It is also important that you have qualified instruction so that the poses are demonstrated in the right way.
If you are unable to find a qualified instructor in your area or just don’t have the time needed to attend certified classes, there are a number of good “Yoga for Beginners” DVD’s that you can use at home. You should also make sure that the person who has made the video is qualified the same as you would if you were taking lessons in person. Make sure that you get a DVD designed specifically for beginners to ensure that you are taught the necessary beginning poses. Once you have mastered them, you will be ready to move on to the next phase.
Some gyms offer yoga for beginners so you may be able to take advantage of classes and work out at the same spot. You can also look online for some instructional videos but will most likely find those demonstrating one or two particular moves.
Yoga is beneficial for many people as a way of getting relief from pain, reducing stress, or for keeping their bodies in peak physical condition. Once you have mastered the basics in yoga for beginners, you will be ready to choose which type of yoga you prefer and what benefits you expect to get from it.
