Yoga isn’t just for adults. There are also many benefits to be obtained from yoga for children. You may realize that your life is filled with stress but have never considered that with all the events and sports that children may be involved in, their lives are stressful as well. Providing yoga for children can help relieve their stress. If you are teaching yoga for children, there are some important things to keep in mind:
• Don’t expect children to stay quiet. Let them incorporate sounds such as those of the animals they are posing as into their practice. You want to encourage them to learn yoga in a fun way so that they will enjoy it, not dread it.
• Encourage their imaginations. Ask them questions about what it would really be like to be the animal or plant that they are posing as.
• The term “facilitator” is used instead of teacher in yoga. Think of yourself as a guide into a different world when you are working with children. Yoga is about creation, expression, and growth.
• Stick with it. It may be frustrating to teach yoga for children who don’t like to hold poses. Find something that they can say while they are holding the poses in order to entertain them until the pose is complete. Gradually, they will improve as they begin to feel the benefits.
If you aren’t sure that yoga for children is a good choice for your child, consider the different types of improvements that it has produced:
• It has shown to increase children’s academic performance and to help them develop better work habits.
• It gives them better self-esteem, a problem experienced by much of today’s youth.
• It also helps them make better decisions by not giving in to peer pressure.
• They will benefit physically through improved strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and coordination.
• It will give them emotional balance and teach them how to decrease anxiety.
