A Contemporary, Irreverent Yoga Book
Yoga Students the world over have heard of the ancient foundational text to contemporary yoga practice, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
And yet most of the bestselling books by the gurus who brought yoga to the West are complex, overly erudite at best, misogynist at worst. From decades of teaching the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to yoga teacher trainees the world over, and many years of thinking about writing a book - I have written a book. Book one out of four on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, making the ancient wisdom speak to the humans we are today. Making it real, easy to grasp with practical actionable points.
Who is Patanjali and Why Read Series?
Patanjali is a legendary ancient Indian sage, often touted as the “Father of Yoga.” It is debated however we can approximate his existence between 200 and 400 BCE. Patañjali’s sutras are a pivotal midpoint of the many thousands of years of yogic philosophy. His fame resides in the systemization of Yoga, delineating a precise psychology of the mind, a methodology for managing suffering.
My book is a contemporaneous take on this timeless ancient wisdom. When reading various translations and commentaires myself I was struck by the overcomplexity and simultaneously by the astounding revelation that every single self-help, new age book can find their wisdom in the sparse sutras of Patanjali. Even psychology is defined in his sutras, classifying the ego and subconscious and yet in psychology studies is he credited for this? I’ll leave that correction to be made by one of you after reading my book!
So many trainees had taken classes on the Sutras before and
Found them complexing, confounding. They were stunned that I could explain in 5 minutes what they still did not understand after a full weekend class on the sutras. Moving from
This wisdom is for us now, for them back then, and for those in the future. It is timeless, profound in its transformational knowledge, now made simple and applicable to you, me, them in this moment.
